Sensational Moms
Hey there, I’m Whitney.

I’m an occupational therapist who’s specialized in sensory & nervous system support for over 15 years.

For several of those years I’ve loved helping other families in clinics & homes, but my training was really put to use when I became a mom of 4 kids.

Like any family, we’ve had our ups and downs & kids with their own struggles.

I was ready to help them through their own struggles with skills I’d spent years honing.

imagine my frustration when they wanted nothing to do with it.

I felt so ashamed when I realized that I couldn’t expect my kids to handle their overwhelm if I couldn’t handle my own.

I knew something felt off, so I started with a functional health practitioner and added in counseling, and I saw some progress, but I just felt stuck. I felt reactive, and somehow a good day just meant getting through it.

Definitely not the connected, joyful motherhood I had in mind.

The idea of trauma and nervous system “healing” seemed to pop up everywhere but didn’t fit my situation. What was wrong with me?

When I finally realized that I was overstimulated,
I was embarrassed & relieved.

Embarrassed, because even though I’d spent many years of sensory-based OT with kids, I’d somehow forgotten that of course adults can feel this way, too.

Relieved, because I could reframe my self-judgment & I knew there were brain-body tools to actually support myself. I wasn’t a monster.

Over time, things felt lighter.

Then something surprising happened: they slowly started using strategies and tools I’d been using to support myself. All without me asking or teaching anything.

If you feel hopeless because your home is anything but peaceful, it doesn’t have to stay that way.

You can share your peace with your kids, but you have to find it first, and it’s not something you can “mindset” your way to.

Your nervous system regulation is the foundation.

You can learn how to use practical brain-body tools and simple rhythms to bring the joy back into motherhood, too.

How does the word calm make you feel?

It used to make me feel guilty.

You already know your bad mood & your dysregulation are contagious, and that’s good news actually.

Sound strange? Here’s why:

That means your nervous system state can influence your kids in other ways, too.

When my kids struggled with sensory overload & emotions, I could see so clearly how they needed what I knew.

The homeschool mom & OT in me eagerly pulled out all my resources.
